Butterfly weed, Perennial of the Year

Our nursery is a pollinator-friendly place—we have honeybee hives on site (in the back of the nursery away from traffic), a wide variety of nesting birds, and of course, native bees and butterflies galore. Last year we hatched dozens of Monarch butterflies, too. The Perennial Plant Association (http://www.perennialplant.org ) has chosen orange butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) as the perennial of the year this year, recognizing the value of this plant in increasing Monarch butterfly populations.
